Montessori Magic Friday: Nutcracker Ballet Music for the Instrument Families of the Orchestra and more!

October 13, 2017

Here is my curated collection of  resources for children to enjoy the music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet while listening for the various Instrument Families of the Orchestra. I've just added five mp3 music downloads (free resource) at my Subscriber's Freebie Collection.      CLICK HERE to check it out!

I love the music from the Nutcracker Ballet no matter what time of year it is! Bringing this music to little children for some special Focused Listening Activities is always engaging because this music is usually a bit familiar to them. And, it is filled with magic!

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO EXPLORE

THIS WONDERFUL MUSIC WITH LITTLE CHILDREN

A few weeks ago, I created my FREE RESOURCE, "Instrument Families of the Orchestra" 3-Part Cards. These cards go well with the mp3 music downloads that I have added to my Subscriber's Freebie Collection. You can lay out these Montessori-style 3-Part Cards and then point to the card that represents the family of instruments that is featured in the particular music being played for the child/ren.

These 3-Part Cards feature the Four Families of the Orchestra

  • Brass Family

  • String Family

  • Woodwinds Family

  • Percussion Family

  • and The Orchestra

My Mp3 music downloads consists of 5 selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet. Each one minute music selection features one of the Instrument Families.

The following Youtube videos give children a bit more advanced experience of recognizing the instruments playing in these pieces from the Nutcracker Ballet music.

"Nutcracker Overture Rhythm Instrument Play Along"

Tchaikovsky's "March" from The Nutcracker Suite-Listening Map

If you don't have a problem with iPads in the hands of little children, you might really like this Interactive Nutcracker Ballet Story Book produced by the San Francisco Ballet. It isn't free, but it's only $4...

As always, I knew I could find a wealth of resources at Deb Chitwood's "Living Montessori Now" site and most are free and DIY!
